What is Vaddanam?
Vaddanam or the waist belt is the heaviest ornament worn by a bride. The traditional South Indian Jewelry is worn around the waist and helps in keeping the saree well draped. Vaddanam, being the heaviest gold ornament that can be worn, usually weighs around 100 to 150 grams. Light weight waist belt can be made in 40 to 50 grams, though such light weight vaddanam are not opted for.
They are known by different names like hip chains, Kamarband, waist belt, oddayanam and more. The history of wearing these waist chains can be traced back to 4000 years or more and were worn as part of religious ceremonies, as accessories and to show affluence.
