The traditional Gundla mala is a beaded necklace having two or three layers and forms a significant part of the bridal jewelry in South India. The basic design includes simple layers of gold beads that, may or may not come with a pendant like peacocks, mangoes etc on one side combining them. The pendant in the middle comes in a variety of shapes like Lakshmi, antique pendants etc. Nowadays many Gundla malas come in simple and light weight designs.
Today, new-age jewelry designers have tried their hands at reforming Gundla mala models to suit the tastes of modern women. These designs display ancient charm as well as contemporary exclusiveness and are loved for their modern twist. However, the traditional gold beaded Gundla malas will always retain their exquisite and royal beauty.
